Soldier Heart

After a year-long absence, war veteran Macenzie returns to her hometown for a memorial service; the arrival is as abrupt as her departure had been. With her former life and close relationships fractured, a chance encounter with two travelers on a train starts to pull her out of her own self-imposed isolation. Soldier Heart takes place in a light-fantasy world and deals in mystery and the highs (and deep, deep lows) as life carries on.

A rumbling heard in the distance. A great beast awakens and breaks through the earth's crust, shaking off the rocks and grit as it stumbles forth with a mighty yawn. Blinking it's eyes up at the sun, it contemplates what day it might be. What year it might be.

"Well, I suppose I've napped long enough." It grumbles.

Walking on sleepy legs, the beast starts the long trek out of it's hole in the ground and into civilization. It's time, the beast things. It's time to get things moving again.

when authors are bums

Okay, so I haven't lost interest in this thing. I'm not really sure what happened here, but the anniversaries of the comic have come and gone. In my last update over a year ago, I said that it'll be back up and running in a few months aaaand... that didn't happen. I have the next pages thumbnailed and I just need to start drawing them for real, but here's my real plan of action.

I took the hiatus and stayed on it because I had a muse for other things, and slowly the interest in the comic has come back. The thing is, the script is something like five years old now--I wrote it a long time before actually starting the pages--and I look at it and feel a sense of despair. This is the first time I've taken on a project like this and it occurred to me at some point that the pace was excruciatingly slow. I'm not quite sure how to fix it except just take out large scenes and probably stick them somewhere in a different file in case I want to draw them. After we get out of this town in the opening scene, a bit more action is going to pick up and the pieces are going to start falling into place. Shenanigans are afoot.

I'm not going to drop the story. I don't know if I even have readers or anything (according to my site stats, I have been getting like 60 pages every few days somehow?), and Mac has been very patient as a character in waiting for me to finally tell her story, so I can't back away now.

In the mean time, I have an art blog at where I post new things on occasion. There's a smattering of Soldier Heart pieces here and there. I've been picking at the cover for the first arc of the story too, which is an image I started in 2012 and am just now getting around to finishing. The flat colors are almost in, and then it's shading+highlights and details and it's done. The muse is coming back.

I was going on a hiatus to tighten up the comic script, and then I wound being overcome in completely different projects and characters. Somewhere along the way, the muse for Soldier Heart ended up taking a very long nap, but here... over a year later, it's starting to wake back up.

The next page is in the queue for next weekend, and then updates are going to be infrequent as I try to get back into the swing of things.

Soldier Heart will get back up and running in the next few months!

Taking a quick hiatus

So I can sort out some art and script stuff for the upcoming memorial scene!

Sorry, guys!

11/11 update

I fell asleep right after coming home from an all-day typography event with Tim Girvin and woke up recently.

So, uh.

The comic update will be up a little later today. I was at school for about 11 hours while working/participating in this event and was dead-tired by the time I got home, so the only thing I could focus on was my desire to sleep. Sorry guys! It'll still be a sunday update.

10/28 Update

There might be a chance that the 10/28 update will be late this week, on account that I am going to be attending a sweet Halloween shindig this weekend!
I'm also starting to prepare not just the next page, but going several pages beyond that since we will be getting into the previously-mentioned memorial. I'm hoping to bump the art quality up more, but the tradeoff for that means putting in more time on the pages. I hope you guys will be pleased with the next section of this chapter, though!

Comic Process

For anyone that's curious, I've uploaded an image talking about my process when working on pages.

Artwork page updated!

Hello everyone! I've added several pieces to the Artwork page! They're new to the site, but not new to me. :P Most of them were done over a year ago, though there is a brand new one from this year. Go check it out!

I've also done a walk through on how I did page 13, and when I get a chance next, I'll put it up on my deviantART page because the file is gigantic. When it is uploaded, it will be available as a link through the Extras page.
